Vincent van Gogh is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists in Western culture. His expressive and vibrant paintings had a far-reaching impact on 20th century art. Though he struggled with mental illness and lived a troubled life, van Gogh produced an astounding amount of work in a short period of time that would go on to inspire generations of artists.

Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853. He was a quiet and thoughtful child who loved to draw and spent much of his free time wandering the countryside around his home. Though he started working at an art dealership in his early twenties, it took several more years before van Gogh fully committed himself to becoming an artist.

In 1880 at the age of 27, van Gogh decided to pursue his passion for art in earnest. He moved to Brussels to begin his formal training. Over the next decade, van Gogh threw himself entirely into his work. Painting with intense fervor, he completed over 2,100 artworks, including 860 oil paintings during the last two years of his life alone.

Van Gogh's signature style was characterized by bold, dramatic brush strokes, vivid colors, and thick layers of paint. He was deeply inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and Impressionist artists like Claude Monet. Van Gogh took these influences and developed his own unique, expressive style. Though he struggled financially during his lifetime, his paintings would go on to greatly impact the development of modern art in the 20th century.
